Hi Anne
I think we share common ancestry: Murray James Hamilton Jackson was the brother of my great grandfather, Charles Welby Jackson.
I don't know if this is much help, but this is an extract from the family history I have been compiling:
Papers left by both Sir Keith Jackson and Amelia Jackson are held at the Royal Geographical Society in London.
The papers of Sir Keith Alexander Jackson, one box and four large files, include his diary in Persia, 1828-1829, including notes on a voyage down the Tigris and Euphrates to Bossora; his private journal, 1838, of the storming of Ghuznee; a journal on a voyage from Bombay to England, 1841 and his rough note- and letter-book, 1842-1843.
Amelia Jackson’s papers consist of travel diaries chiefly her own describing tours through France, the Netherlands and Wales, 1822-1828 and diaries describing her life in England (Bath, East Malling, Taunton), 1861-1868. Also the diary of her father George Waddell in Benares, Malabar and Bombay, 1799-1800 and his diary in Bombay including of his marriage to Amelia King, 1800-1803 and a diary of her brother George Waddell Junior on tour in Wales, May-September 1828.
The papers were donated by Sir Robert Jackson in 1934.
Sir Keith Jackson was captivated by Scinde. The Ames Library of South Asia at the University of Minnesota exhibits of The First Afghan War, 1839-1842, contains some of his paintings from the campaign.
The date on your ring is the date of the death of Sir John Jackson, 1st baronet. His wife, Charlotte Spry Jackson, died in 1807. According to my information, his son, John Jackson, who is our common ancestor, died 2 June 1869, a few days after his wife died (25 May 1869). They were both buried in Bolton Street cemetery. I'm not sure what you make of all that... |

I am a descendant of William John Jackson living in Wellington, NZ. I am privileged to have passed down to me a mourning ring engraved with the name of Sir John Jackson and the date 17 May 1820. I have been told that it is the mourning ring that he wore after his wife Honoria died. Was that soon after they arrived in NZ? It contains a lock of hair which I believe was hers.
I am keen to learn more about Sir Keith Alexander Jackson, particularly the role he played in Afghanistan during the Campaign of the Army of the Indus. I first read about it in Artist Surveyors of Early New Zealand. Now I would like to know more about Sir Keith's associates during that period and whether he ever met Shah Shoojah, his son Prince Futty Jung or how well he knew the Shah's British commissary, Captain Johnson. Can anyone help with references?
